Hardwood Refinishing

The transformation that surprises every homeowner

Worn, scratched, or faded hardwood floors don't need to be replaced. Refinishing sands them back to raw wood, applies a new stain and finish — and the result often looks better than new.

At a fraction of replacement cost, refinishing gives existing floors new life. We work with solid hardwood of all species throughout Rhode Island.

Knowing When

Signs your floors need refinishing

If your floors show any of these, refinishing is almost certainly worth doing.

01

Visible scratches throughout

Surface-level scratches that catch light or feel rough to the touch are the clearest sign.

02

Dull, faded finish

When cleaning no longer restores shine, the finish is depleted and the wood is unprotected.

03

Gray or black staining

Discoloration — especially near windows or high-traffic zones — indicates moisture damage in the wood grain.

04

Water marks that won't clean

White haze or dark rings that persist after cleaning mean moisture has penetrated the finish.

05

Boards wearing unevenly

High-traffic paths showing different wear patterns than surrounding areas means the finish is gone there.

06

Rough or splintering surface

If feet snag or barefoot contact feels rough, the finish is fully worn through.

The Process

How refinishing works

01

Assessment

We check wear layer thickness, species, existing finish type, and condition before quoting.

02

Preparation

Furniture moved, floor cleared, containment set up to minimize dust spread.

03

Sanding

Multiple passes — drum, edge, and detail — down to raw wood. Grain direction followed carefully.

04

Stain (optional)

New color applied and allowed to cure. Test boards shown before committing.

05

Finish Coats

2–3 coats of polyurethane or hardwax oil, with light sanding between coats.

06

Cure & Return

Light foot traffic in 24 hours; full cure in 7–14 days. We walk through together at completion.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

01

How long does refinishing take?

Most projects take 3–5 days — sanding, staining, and 2–3 coats of finish with required dry time between each. We discuss the exact timeline based on your square footage and finish choice.
02

How many times can hardwood be refinished?

Solid hardwood can typically be refinished 5–10 times over its life, depending on the original thickness. We check the wear layer before quoting — if it's too thin, we'll tell you.
03

What does the sanding process involve?

We use drum and edge sanders to remove the existing finish down to raw wood. Sanding creates dust — we use containment strategies and clean up thoroughly, but some dust always circulates.
04

Do I need to leave during refinishing?

We recommend it — especially during stain and finish coats. The fumes from oil-based finishes require ventilation and are best avoided for 24-48 hours per coat. Water-based finishes have lower VOCs.
05

Can you change the color when refinishing?

Yes. Refinishing includes sanding down to raw wood, which lets us apply a completely different stain — lighter, darker, cooler, warmer. We bring samples to see the effect on your specific wood.
